AFRICANAH

I know them, I doafricanah 2
Eyes red as a thousand comets
Like they are bitten by the bite of a million hornets
But they are eyes red with tears.

I know them
Mouths ululating in lamentation
In such refined words
It’s the national anthem they purge.

I know them
Corrupt souls and heavy hands
Squatting nibble before the wake
At the expense of an entire land

I know even
The protruded girth polished politely
The sick and ridden child
Hungry to satisfaction in some lonesome village.

I know the song
The unifying drum beat
When it plays everything becomes surreal
And delusion eats bald heads with palm oil.

You see
I am Africanah!
I know the nonsense.
